Your seniors are your superpower — if you pick the right ones. Here's which groups actually help, and how to spot the ones wearing a senior's name.
The Indian Students Association (sometimes "International Students Association") is a registered student org on most US campuses — open to any enrolled student.
WHAT ISA ACTUALLY DOES
Beyond Diwali nights and Garba events, ISAs do the unglamorous work that matters: airport pickups for new arrivals, apartment and housing help, roommate matching, and city familiarization. Find your campus ISA before you fly — introduce yourself, ask about pickup, and get into their housing channels. It's the closest thing to a landing team you'll get.
Admit groups are genuinely useful — for roommate searches, airport-pickup coordination, forex and debit-card tips, and document checklists. They're also where the scams live.
THE RULES
Never wire money to a stranger. "Seniors" asking for payment for airport pickups, housing "bookings," or forex deals are a known community-reported pattern — treat every money request as a scam until proven otherwise on a live video call with ID shown. Real seniors help for free or for chai; scammers always need a wire transfer.
Find groups through your university's admit portal, current students' Instagram pages, ISA seniors, and subreddit/Telegram searches. Lurk first: the groups with strict admins and no spam are the ones worth your time.
Most first-semester housing horror stories start with a deposit sent to someone the student never met.
RED FLAGS (UNIVERSITY-VERIFIED)
Rent far below market value. Landlord won't meet or allow a tour before a deposit. Requests to wire money — especially international wires. Pressure to commit within 24 hours. Electronic communication only, no video call.
THE CHEQUE TRICK
They "accidentally" send too much money and ask you to refund the difference — then their cheque bounces and you're out the refund. Always get a live video walkthrough of the actual apartment, verify the address independently, and never pay before a lease is signed.
Indian grocery stores, temples, and gurudwaras double as community infrastructure.
WHY IT MATTERS
Their bulletin boards carry roommate ads, ride shares, and festival events you won't find online. In your first month, visiting the nearest Indian grocery store does more for your support network than a week of scrolling admit groups.
